Emmy Award‑winning actor and director Timothy Busfield surrendered Tuesday to New Mexico authorities to face serious charges related to alleged sexual misconduct with minors, including criminal sexual contact and child abuse, according to Associated Press reporting on the arrest.

Busfield, 68, best known for roles in “The West Wing,” “Thirtysomething” and “Field of Dreams,” turned himself in at the Albuquerque Metropolitan Detention Center after an arrest warrant was issued earlier this month. The charges stem from a criminal complaint alleging inappropriate contact with two young boys who appeared as child actors on the set of “The Cleaning Lady,” a television series Busfield directed and acted in.

According to the affidavit, the alleged misconduct occurred between 2022 and 2024 while the boys were working on the production in Albuquerque. One of the children reportedly told investigators that Busfield touched him inappropriately on multiple occasions beginning when he was 7 years old; his twin brother also alleged similar contact.

In a video obtained by CBS News, Busfield denied the allegations, calling them “lies” and vowing to fight the charges. He suggested the accusations stem from a dispute over casting decisions on the show.

The criminal complaint lists two counts of criminal sexual contact of a minor and one count of child abuse, with prosecutors alleging one of the boys was later diagnosed with post‑traumatic stress disorder and anxiety following the reported incidents.

Busfield’s legal team has argued that a Warner Bros. internal investigation found no corroborating evidence to support the misconduct allegations, and some defense representatives have characterized the situation as a retaliatory effort tied to the children being recast on the series.

Warner Bros. issued a statement affirming its commitment to safety protocols on all productions and pledged cooperation with law enforcement as the case continues.

As of Wednesday, Busfield remained in custody with his first court appearance scheduled in Bernalillo County. His wife, actress Melissa Gilbert, has not publicly addressed the matter and is reportedly refraining from comment at the request of legal counsel.
